The Proper Disposal of Dry Ice
The Proper Disposal of Dry Ice
Using dry ice products to clean materials, removal scale, paint, and rust, and to chill critical food products are just some of the different ways they can be used to make your life easier. However, this product also requires great responsibility in how disposed. Here are some things to keep in mind when you are dealing with leftover dry ice materials in order to handle them safely and responsibly.
Sublimation of Dry Ice
Dry ice goes through the process of sublimation when it begins to deteriorate from its solid form. Sublimation refers to the conversion of the solid form of dry ice to its gaseous form, which is carbon dioxide. This process begins at a very low temperature of -109.3F (-78.5C). Carbon Dioxide gas is one and half times heavier than air and able to displace oxygen in smaller and tighter confined spaces. CO2 can be toxic in high concentrations, so it must be dealt with in open spaces where there is excellent ventilation to allow the product to undergo sublimation.
Disposal of Dry Ice
Dry ice must be handled with proper safety gear in order to prevent burns. Cryogenic safety gear is needed to handle any dry ice material as well as appropriate safety glasses or a face shield.
Dry ice cannot be stored for disposal in a tightly sealed container. As dry ice undergoes sublimation gas will build up in the container (screw tight container, garbage can, etc.) creating pressure and likely causing an explosion. Styrofoam is a good storage container since it has insulation properties yet is not air-tight.
Dry ice must not be disposed of in any plumbing system (toilets, sinks, etc.) as it will cause immediate freezing and can destroy pipes.
If dry ice is left in a well-ventilated, attended area while it sublimates, it will safely do so without incident and without harm to the environment.
