Understanding Gas Blends in Welding

Some need gases to reduce spatter, others to increase it.

Some gases, meanwhile, are only efficient provided they are in the exact quantity. Others, like Nitrogen, can be highly dangerous on their own but become useful when combined with another gas — like argon.

One of the most common blends is a 75% argon and 25% carbon dioxide mix, which is known to cause less spatter. Another common blend that improves weld quality is acetylene and oxygen, which is ideal when working with steel.
