Which is Stronger: MIG or TIG?

Which is stronger: MIG or TIG?

MIG and TIG welding are two of the most commonly used welding practices in the welding industry. While they each are favored for different projects, welders and those in the industry are still comparing the two and want to make sure they are getting the strongest and most efficient weld in the end. So, which one is stronger? Keep reading!

What is MIG welding?

MIG welding also known as Metal Inert Gas welding, can be defined as the process in which an electric arc forms between a consumable MIG wire electrode and the workpiece metal, which then heats the workpiece metal, causing them to fuse. To simply put it, MIG welding works by continuously feeding a wire through a welding gun at a steady pace.

Benefits of MIG welding:

  • Easy process to learn
  • Quick speed at which wires fuse together
  • Can weld thicker metals at a faster rate

What is TIG welding?

TIG welding, or Tungsten Inert Gas welding, can be defined as a welding process that uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld. Basically, long rods are used to fuse two metals directly together. While TIG welding requires lots of skill, it is a clean, versatile process that produces excellent welds.

Benefits of TIG welding:

  • Produces extreme heat, which speeds up the fusing process
  • Has a slow cooling rate
  • Creates strong joints

Is MIG or TIG welding stronger?

TIG welding is known to be stronger than MIG welding due to its ability to produce extreme heat and its slow cooling rate. This ultimately results in high strength and ductility, as well as creating stronger joints. However, MIG welding can weld thicker metals at a quicker rate – so it is best to weigh out the pros and cons of the two before determining which method you want to use.
