  • Vulcan Materials Enhances Workflow Through Microbulk Solution

With over 100 years of service, Vulcan Materials is the nation’s largest supplier of aggregate construction materials that contribute to projects ranging from highways to residential developments. Since 2014, Vulcan has relied on nexAir as a trusted gas supplier, receiving frequent deliveries to support its operations across multiple sites.

Vulcan had been using a cylinder-based production model, but as its business grew, this process created significant operational challenges. The welding crew began experiencing overcrowded storage areas from the vast number of cylinders, which limited valuable workspace. On occasion, its team would utilize all gases before the next delivery cycle which created interruptions in output. Not to mention, finding a solution to eliminate repeated cylinder handling was imperative in reducing the risk of injury with safety being a top priority.

Recognizing the need for more efficiency, the nexAir Territory Manager brought a set of alternatives to Vulcan’s welding shop manager for evaluation. After reviewing the facility’s gas usage and discussing long-term goals, the Territory Manager recommended transitioning from cylinders to a microbulk system – a 1,000L microbulk argon tank along with a 750LB carbon dioxide tank. The nexAir Territory Manager expressed, “It was clear microbulk would offer real ease of mind – fewer deliveries to manage, safer handling without all the cylinder swaps, and a scalable setup that supports their growth without added complexity.”

Vulcan found the proposal beneficial and completed the microbulk upgrade on August 13. nexAir then equipped the tanks with telemetry systems to automatically monitor gas levels and signal when deliveries are needed to further enhance efficiency. Now, instead of placing orders manually, the company can rely on an automated system for refills.

Since the installation, Vulcan has experienced improvements in both workflow and safety. Welders no longer face gaps in production while waiting for shipments, and the shop has gained valuable workspace that was once occupied by dozens of cylinders. A Vulcan team member reported, “After switching to the shielding gas bulk tank system, our welding time has increased significantly as we no longer have to manually change cylinders out of welding machines. The risks of physical handling have also dropped considerably, reinforcing our commitment to worker safety.” This switch to microbulk is a continuation of nexAir’s dedication to strengthen long-standing partnerships and provide top-tier customer service.
