What Spec Gases Are and Why Composition Has to Be Exact
Specialty gases used in calibration and testing are produced to a stated composition with defined uncertainty limits. A cylinder certified at 100 ppm carbon monoxide in nitrogen, for example, should contain that concentration within the tolerance stated on the certificate of analysis. Laboratories use these gases to set instrument response and establish the reference points that measurements are compared against.
Most analytical measurement methods are comparative. An instrument doesn’t generate a result from nothing. It compares the sample being analyzed against a known standard and produces a reading based on that comparison. If the calibration gas doesn’t accurately represent what it’s certified to contain, the instrument’s response is calibrated to the wrong reference, and every subsequent result reflects that error.
Purity Grades and What the Differences Mean in Practice
Specialty gases used in analytical applications typically range from 99.999 percent, known as 5.0 grade, up to 99.9999 percent, or 6.0 grade, depending on the sensitivity of the application. The difference between a 4.8 grade and a 5.0 grade can seem small on paper, but in a high-sensitivity application, residual impurities in the lower grade gas are enough to produce interference that shifts results outside acceptable limits.
In chromatography, moisture and hydrocarbon contamination in the carrier gas degrade separation quality and damage the column over repeated runs. In spectrometry, operating gases need to meet specific purity grades to maintain plasma stability and avoid spectral interference. The gas running through the system is a direct variable in the quality of the result, not a passive background element.
The Role of Specific Gases in Research Environments
Different research applications call for different gases, each chosen for specific chemical or physical properties. Argon is used to create plasma energy for ionizing samples in instruments like atomic emission spectrometers and mass spectrometers. Carbon dioxide is used in incubators and bioreactors to maintain the pH conditions needed for cell growth.
