LPG: How It Powers Our Wheels Today
LPG, more commonly known as Autogas or automotive liquefied petroleum gas, is a cleaner burning fuel that is becoming more popular as a choice of fuel for powering everyday vehicles of all sorts. With lower emission rates than other fossil fuels, LPG helps reduce environmental impact.
Several country sponsored studies around the globe have shown that LPG outperforms both gasoline and diesel fuels in relation to the emissions that it creates. As a result, LPG has been finding increased uses in various vehicles that we see in both consumer and industrial applications. In some cases, the favorable cost of LPG as compared to other fossil fuels has been a driver in its use and acceptance.
LPG in Consumer Vehicles
These days, LPG can be found in vehicles that you can get behind the wheel of everyday, whether on the highway or on the fairway. It has been adapted for use in certain passenger cars, yet has been more prevalent in powering ATV’s, trucks, three wheelers, city transportation buses, small water crafts, small airplanes, hot air balloons, and golf carts.
As an example, in studies completed on city buses that use LPG compared to those buses that use diesel, using LPG can achieve emission reductions of around two-thirds for both NOx and particulates. Emissions of hydrocarbons alone are reduced by well over 50% with the use of LPG vs diesel.
LPG in Industrial Vehicles
LPG is used to power fork lifts in warehousing operations around the world, as well as agricultural tractors on farms, rail heater cars on railways and heating for switches and rails during cold weather, ground services at airports such as plane pushback tugs and baggage service carriers, and even on the water powering a host of vessels.
In marine applications, the use of low sulfur fuels is of growing importance in our world. When you combine LPG operations with either an SCR or EGR system, the output of sulfur is greatly reduced, even though LPG already has low sulfur levels. Use of LPG for tankers, container ships and even small crafts shows that LPG has a lower cost of use, ownership, and long term maintenance for the boat/ship owner. LPG eliminates the risks posed by using ethanol gas such as leaving deposits in fuel systems and its reactive nature with water.
